9:1
بَرَآءَةٞ baraatun Freedom from obligations مِّنَ mina from ٱللَّهِ al-lahi Allah وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ warasulihi and His Messenger إِلَى ila to ٱلَّذِينَ alladhina those (with) whom عَٰهَدتُّم ahadttum you made a covenant مِّنَ mina from ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ al-mush'rikina the polytheists ١
baraatun mina al-lahi warasulihi ila alladhina ahadttum mina al-mush'rikina
— Transliteration
Freedom from (all) obligations (is declared) from Allah and His Messenger (SAW) to those of the Mushrikun (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah), with whom you made a treaty

9:2
فَسِيحُواْ fasihu So move about فِي fi in ٱلۡأَرۡضِ al-ardi the land أَرۡبَعَةَ arba'ata (during) four أَشۡهُرٖ ashhurin months وَٱعۡلَمُوٓاْ wa-i'lamu but know أَنَّكُمۡ annakum that you غَيۡرُ ghayru (can) not مُعۡجِزِي mu'jizi escape ٱللَّهِ al-lahi Allah وَأَنَّ wa-anna and that ٱللَّهَ al-laha Allah مُخۡزِي mukh'zi (is) the One Who (will) disgrace ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ al-kafirina the disbelievers ٢
fasihu fi al-ardi arba'ata ashhurin wa-i'lamu annakum ghayru mu'jizi al-lahi wa-anna al-laha mukh'zi al-kafirina
— Transliteration
So travel freely (O Mushrikun - see V. 2:105) for four months (as you will) throughout the land, but know that you cannot escape (from the Punishment of) Allah, and Allah will disgrace the disbelievers

9:3
وَأَذَٰنٞ wa-adhanun And an announcement مِّنَ mina from Allah ٱللَّهِ al-lahi from Allah وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ warasulihi and His Messenger إِلَى ila to ٱلنَّاسِ al-nasi the people يَوۡمَ yawma (on the) day ٱلۡحَجِّ al-haji (of) the greater Pilgrimage ٱلۡأَكۡبَرِ al-akbari (of) the greater Pilgrimage أَنَّ anna that ٱللَّهَ al-laha Allah بَرِيٓءٞ barion (is) free from obligations مِّنَ mina [of] ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ al-mush'rikina (to) the polytheists وَرَسُولُهُۥۚ warasuluhu and (so is) His Messenger فَإِن fa-in So if تُبۡتُمۡ tub'tum you repent فَهُوَ fahuwa then it is خَيۡرٞ khayrun best لَّكُمۡۖ lakum for you وَإِن wa-in But if تَوَلَّيۡتُمۡ tawallaytum you turn away فَٱعۡلَمُوٓاْ fa-i'lamu then know أَنَّكُمۡ annakum that you غَيۡرُ ghayru (can) not مُعۡجِزِي mu'jizi escape ٱللَّهِۗ al-lahi Allah وَبَشِّرِ wabashiri And give glad tidings ٱلَّذِينَ alladhina (to) those who كَفَرُواْ kafaru disbelieve بِعَذَابٍ bi'adhabin of a punishment أَلِيمٍ alimin painful ٣
wa-adhanun mina al-lahi warasulihi ila al-nasi yawma al-haji al-akbari anna al-laha barion mina al-mush'rikina warasuluhu fa-in tub'tum fahuwa khayrun lakum wa-in tawallaytum fa-i'lamu annakum ghayru mu'jizi al-lahi wabashiri alladhina kafaru bi'adhabin alimin
— Transliteration
And a declaration from Allah and His Messenger to mankind on the greatest day (the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah - the 12th month of Islamic calendar) that Allah is free from (all) obligations to the Mushrikun (see V. 2:105) and so is His Messenger. So if you (Mushrikun) repent, it is better for you, but if you turn away, then know that you cannot escape (from the Punishment of) Allah. And give tidings (O Muhammad SAW) of a painful torment to those who disbelieve

9:4
إِلَّا illa Except ٱلَّذِينَ alladhina those (with) whom عَٰهَدتُّم ahadttum you have a covenant مِّنَ mina among ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ al-mush'rikina the polytheists ثُمَّ thumma then لَمۡ lam not يَنقُصُوكُمۡ yanqusukum they have failed you شَيۡـٔٗا shayan (in any) thing وَلَمۡ walam and not يُظَٰهِرُواْ yuzahiru they have supported عَلَيۡكُمۡ alaykum against you أَحَدٗا ahadan anyone فَأَتِمُّوٓاْ fa-atimmu so fulfil إِلَيۡهِمۡ ilayhim to them عَهۡدَهُمۡ ahdahum their treaty إِلَىٰ ila till مُدَّتِهِمۡۚ muddatihim their term إِنَّ inna Indeed ٱللَّهَ al-laha Allah يُحِبُّ yuhibbu loves ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ al-mutaqina the righteous ٤
illa alladhina ahadttum mina al-mush'rikina thumma lam yanqusukum shayan walam yuzahiru alaykum ahadan fa-atimmu ilayhim ahdahum ila muddatihim inna al-laha yuhibbu al-mutaqina
— Transliteration
Except those of the Mushrikun with whom you have a treaty, and who have not subsequently failed you in aught, nor have supported anyone against you. So fulfill their treaty to them to the end of their term. Surely Allah loves Al- Mattaqun (the pious - see V)

9:5
فَإِذَا fa-idha Then when ٱنسَلَخَ insalakha have passed ٱلۡأَشۡهُرُ al-ashhuru the sacred months ٱلۡحُرُمُ al-hurumu the sacred months فَٱقۡتُلُواْ fa-uq'tulu then kill ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ al-mush'rikina the polytheists حَيۡثُ haythu wherever وَجَدتُّمُوهُمۡ wajadttumuhum you find them وَخُذُوهُمۡ wakhudhuhum and seize them وَٱحۡصُرُوهُمۡ wa-uh'suruhum and besiege them وَٱقۡعُدُواْ wa-uq'udu and sit (in wait) لَهُمۡ lahum for them كُلَّ kulla (at) every مَرۡصَدٖۚ marsadin place of ambush فَإِن fa-in But if تَابُواْ tabu they repent وَأَقَامُواْ wa-aqamu and establish ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ al-salata the prayer وَءَاتَوُاْ waatawu and give ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ al-zakata the zakah فَخَلُّواْ fakhallu then leave سَبِيلَهُمۡۚ sabilahum their way إِنَّ inna Indeed ٱللَّهَ al-laha Allah غَفُورٞ ghafurun (is) OftForgiving رَّحِيمٞ rahimun Most Merciful ٥
fa-idha insalakha al-ashhuru al-hurumu fa-uq'tulu al-mush'rikina haythu wajadttumuhum wakhudhuhum wa-uh'suruhum wa-uq'udu lahum kulla marsadin fa-in tabu wa-aqamu al-salata waatawu al-zakata fakhallu sabilahum inna al-laha ghafurun rahimun
— Transliteration
Then when the Sacred Months (the Ist, 7th, 11th, and 12th months of the Islamic calendar) have passed, then kill the Mushrikun (see V. 2:105) wherever you find them, and capture them and besiege them, and prepare for them each and every ambush. But if they repent and perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), and give Zakat, then leave their way free. Verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful

9:6
وَإِنۡ wa-in And if أَحَدٞ ahadun anyone مِّنَ mina of ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ al-mush'rikina the polytheists ٱسۡتَجَارَكَ is'tajaraka seek your protection فَأَجِرۡهُ fa-ajir'hu then grant him protection حَتَّىٰ hatta until يَسۡمَعَ yasma'a he hears كَلَٰمَ kalama (the) Words of Allah ٱللَّهِ al-lahi (the) Words of Allah ثُمَّ thumma Then أَبۡلِغۡهُ abligh'hu escort him مَأۡمَنَهُۥۚ mamanahu (to) his place of safety ذَٰلِكَ dhalika That بِأَنَّهُمۡ bi-annahum (is) because they قَوۡمٞ qawmun (are) a people لَّا la (who) do not know يَعۡلَمُونَ ya'lamuna (who) do not know ٦
wa-in ahadun mina al-mush'rikina is'tajaraka fa-ajir'hu hatta yasma'a kalama al-lahi thumma abligh'hu mamanahu dhalika bi-annahum qawmun la ya'lamuna
— Transliteration
And if anyone of the Mushrikun (polytheists, idolaters, pagans, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah) seeks your protection then grant him protection, so that he may hear the Word of Allah (the Quran), and then escort him to where he can be secure, that is because they are men who know not

9:7
كَيۡفَ kayfa How يَكُونُ yakunu can (there) be لِلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ lil'mush'rikina for the polytheists عَهۡدٌ ahdun a covenant عِندَ inda with ٱللَّهِ al-lahi Allah وَعِندَ wa'inda and with رَسُولِهِۦٓ rasulihi His Messenger إِلَّا illa except ٱلَّذِينَ alladhina those (with) whom عَٰهَدتُّمۡ ahadttum you made a covenant عِندَ inda near ٱلۡمَسۡجِدِ al-masjidi AlMasjid ٱلۡحَرَامِۖ al-harami AlHaraam? فَمَا fama So long as ٱسۡتَقَٰمُواْ is'taqamu they are upright لَكُمۡ lakum to you فَٱسۡتَقِيمُواْ fa-is'taqimu then you be upright لَهُمۡۚ lahum to them إِنَّ inna Indeed ٱللَّهَ al-laha Allah يُحِبُّ yuhibbu loves ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ al-mutaqina the righteous ٧
kayfa yakunu lil'mush'rikina ahdun inda al-lahi wa'inda rasulihi illa alladhina ahadttum inda al-masjidi al-harami fama is'taqamu lakum fa-is'taqimu lahum inna al-laha yuhibbu al-mutaqina
— Transliteration
How can there be a covenant with Allah and with His Messenger for the Mushrikun (polytheists, idolaters, pagans, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah) except those with whom you made a covenant near Al-Masjid-al-Haram (at Makkah)? So long, as they are true to you, stand you true to them. Verily, Allah loves Al-Muttaqun (the pious - see V)

9:8
كَيۡفَ kayfa How وَإِن wa-in while if يَظۡهَرُواْ yazharu they gain dominance عَلَيۡكُمۡ alaykum over you لَا la they do not regard (the ties) يَرۡقُبُواْ yarqubu they do not regard (the ties) فِيكُمۡ fikum with you إِلّٗا illan (of) kinship وَلَا wala and not ذِمَّةٗۚ dhimmatan covenant of protection? يُرۡضُونَكُم yur'dunakum They satisfy you بِأَفۡوَٰهِهِمۡ bi-afwahihim with their mouths وَتَأۡبَىٰ wataba but refuse قُلُوبُهُمۡ qulubuhum their hearts وَأَكۡثَرُهُمۡ wa-aktharuhum and most of them فَٰسِقُونَ fasiquna (are) defiantly disobedient ٨
kayfa wa-in yazharu alaykum la yarqubu fikum illan wala dhimmatan yur'dunakum bi-afwahihim wataba qulubuhum wa-aktharuhum fasiquna
— Transliteration
How (can there be such a covenant with them) that when you are overpowered by them, they regard not the ties, either of kinship or of covenant with you? With (good words from) their mouths they please you, but their hearts are averse to you, and most of them are Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah)

9:9
ٱشۡتَرَوۡاْ ish'taraw They exchange بِـَٔايَٰتِ biayati [with] the Verses of Allah ٱللَّهِ al-lahi [with] the Verses of Allah ثَمَنٗا thamanan (for) a little price قَلِيلٗا qalilan (for) a little price فَصَدُّواْ fasaddu and they hinder (people) عَن an from سَبِيلِهِۦٓۚ sabilihi His way إِنَّهُمۡ innahum Indeed سَآءَ saa evil مَا ma (is) what كَانُواْ kanu they used to يَعۡمَلُونَ ya'maluna do ٩
ish'taraw biayati al-lahi thamanan qalilan fasaddu an sabilihi innahum saa ma kanu ya'maluna
— Transliteration
They have purchased with the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allah a little gain, and they hindered men from His Way; evil indeed is that which they used to do

9:10
لَا la Not يَرۡقُبُونَ yarqubuna they respect (the ties) فِي fi towards مُؤۡمِنٍ mu'minin a believer إِلّٗا illan (of) kinship وَلَا wala and not ذِمَّةٗۚ dhimmatan covenant of protection وَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ wa-ulaika And those هُمُ humu [they] ٱلۡمُعۡتَدُونَ al-mu'taduna (are) the transgressors ١٠
la yarqubuna fi mu'minin illan wala dhimmatan wa-ulaika humu al-mu'taduna
— Transliteration
With regard to a believer, they respect not the ties, either of kinship or of covenant! It is they who are the transgressors
