85:1
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ wal-samai By the sky ذَاتِ dhati containing ٱلۡبُرُوجِ al-buruji the constellations ١
wal-samai dhati al-buruji
— Transliteration
By the heaven, holding the big stars

85:2
وَٱلۡيَوۡمِ wal-yawmi And the Day ٱلۡمَوۡعُودِ al-maw'udi Promised ٢
wal-yawmi al-maw'udi
— Transliteration
And by the Promised Day (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)

85:3
وَشَاهِدٖ washahidin And (the) witness وَمَشۡهُودٖ wamashhudin and what is witnessed ٣
washahidin wamashhudin
— Transliteration
And by the witnessing day (i.e. Friday), and by the witnessed day [i.e. the day of 'Arafat (Hajj) the ninth of Dhul-Hijjah

85:4
قُتِلَ qutila Destroyed were أَصۡحَٰبُ ashabu (the) companions ٱلۡأُخۡدُودِ al-ukh'dudi (of) the pit ٤
qutila ashabu al-ukh'dudi
— Transliteration
Cursed were the people of the ditch (the story of the Boy and the King)

85:5
ٱلنَّارِ al-nari (Of) the fire ذَاتِ dhati full ٱلۡوَقُودِ al-waqudi (of) the fuel ٥
al-nari dhati al-waqudi
— Transliteration
Fire supplied (abundantly) with fuel

85:6
إِذۡ idh When هُمۡ hum they عَلَيۡهَا alayha by it قُعُودٞ qu'udun (were) sitting ٦
idh hum alayha qu'udun
— Transliteration
When they sat by it (fire)

85:7
وَهُمۡ wahum And they عَلَىٰ ala over مَا ma what يَفۡعَلُونَ yaf 'aluna they were doing بِٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ bil-mu'minina to the believers شُهُودٞ shuhudun witnesses ٧
wahum ala ma yaf 'aluna bil-mu'minina shuhudun
— Transliteration
And they witnessed what they were doing against the believers (i.e. burning them)

85:8
وَمَا wama And not نَقَمُواْ naqamu they resented مِنۡهُمۡ min'hum [of] them إِلَّآ illa except أَن an that يُؤۡمِنُواْ yu'minu they believed بِٱللَّهِ bil-lahi in Allah ٱلۡعَزِيزِ al-'azizi the AllMighty ٱلۡحَمِيدِ al-hamidi the Praiseworthy ٨
wama naqamu min'hum illa an yu'minu bil-lahi al-'azizi al-hamidi
— Transliteration
They had nothing against them, except that they believed in Allah, the All-Mighty, Worthy of all Praise

85:9
ٱلَّذِي alladhi The One Who لَهُۥ lahu for Him مُلۡكُ mul'ku (is) the dominion ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ al-samawati (of) the heavens وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ wal-ardi and the earth وَٱللَّهُ wal-lahu and Allah عَلَىٰ ala on كُلِّ kulli every شَيۡءٖ shayin thing شَهِيدٌ shahidun (is) a Witness ٩
alladhi lahu mul'ku al-samawati wal-ardi wal-lahu ala kulli shayin shahidun
— Transliteration
Who, to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth! And Allah is Witness over everything

85:10
إِنَّ inna Indeed ٱلَّذِينَ alladhina those who فَتَنُواْ fatanu persecuted ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ al-mu'minina the believing men وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَٰتِ wal-mu'minati and the believing women ثُمَّ thumma then لَمۡ lam not يَتُوبُواْ yatubu they repented فَلَهُمۡ falahum then for them عَذَابُ adhabu (is the) punishment جَهَنَّمَ jahannama (of) Hell وَلَهُمۡ walahum and for them عَذَابُ adhabu (is the) punishment ٱلۡحَرِيقِ al-hariqi (of) the Burning Fire ١٠
inna alladhina fatanu al-mu'minina wal-mu'minati thumma lam yatubu falahum adhabu jahannama walahum adhabu al-hariqi
— Transliteration
Verily, those who put into trial the believing men and believing women (by torturing them and burning them), and then do not turn in repentance, (to Allah), will have the torment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the burning Fire
