72:1
قُلۡ qul Say أُوحِيَ uhiya It has been revealed إِلَيَّ ilayya to me أَنَّهُ annahu that ٱسۡتَمَعَ is'tama'a listened نَفَرٞ nafarun a group مِّنَ mina of ٱلۡجِنِّ al-jini the jinn فَقَالُوٓاْ faqalu and they said إِنَّا inna Indeed we سَمِعۡنَا sami'na heard قُرۡءَانًا qur'anan a Quran عَجَبٗا ajaban amazing ١
qul uhiya ilayya annahu is'tama'a nafarun mina al-jini faqalu inna sami'na qur'anan ajaban
— Transliteration
Say (O Muhammad SAW): "It has been revealed to me that a group (from three to ten in number) of jinns listened (to this Quran). They said: 'Verily! We have heard a wonderful Recital (this Quran)

72:2
يَهۡدِيٓ yahdi It guides إِلَى ila to ٱلرُّشۡدِ al-rush'di the right way فَـَٔامَنَّا faamanna so we believe بِهِۦۖ bihi in it وَلَن walan and never نُّشۡرِكَ nush'rika we will associate بِرَبِّنَآ birabbina with our Lord أَحَدٗا ahadan anyone ٢
yahdi ila al-rush'di faamanna bihi walan nush'rika birabbina ahadan
— Transliteration
It guides to the Right Path, and we have believed therein, and we shall never join (in worship) anything with our Lord (Allah)

72:3
وَأَنَّهُۥ wa-annahu And that He تَعَٰلَىٰ ta'ala Exalted is جَدُّ jaddu (the) Majesty رَبِّنَا rabbina (of) our Lord مَا ma not ٱتَّخَذَ ittakhadha He has taken صَٰحِبَةٗ sahibatan a wife وَلَا wala and not وَلَدٗا waladan a son ٣
wa-annahu ta'ala jaddu rabbina ma ittakhadha sahibatan wala waladan
— Transliteration
And exalted be the Majesty of our Lord, He has taken neither a wife, nor a son (or offspring or children)

72:4
وَأَنَّهُۥ wa-annahu And that he كَانَ kana used to يَقُولُ yaqulu speak سَفِيهُنَا safihuna the foolish among us عَلَى ala against ٱللَّهِ al-lahi Allah شَطَطٗا shatatan an excessive transgression ٤
wa-annahu kana yaqulu safihuna ala al-lahi shatatan
— Transliteration
And that the foolish among us [i.e. Iblis (Satan) or the polytheists amongst the jinns] used to utter against Allah that which was wrong and not right

72:5
وَأَنَّا wa-anna And that we ظَنَنَّآ zananna thought أَن an that لَّن lan never تَقُولَ taqula will say ٱلۡإِنسُ al-insu the men وَٱلۡجِنُّ wal-jinu and the jinn عَلَى ala against ٱللَّهِ al-lahi Allah كَذِبٗا kadhiban any lie ٥
wa-anna zananna an lan taqula al-insu wal-jinu ala al-lahi kadhiban
— Transliteration
And verily, we thought that men and jinns would not utter a lie against Allah

72:6
وَأَنَّهُۥ wa-annahu And that كَانَ kana (there) were رِجَالٞ rijalun men مِّنَ mina among ٱلۡإِنسِ al-insi mankind يَعُوذُونَ ya'udhuna who sought refuge بِرِجَالٖ birijalin in (the) men مِّنَ mina from ٱلۡجِنِّ al-jini the jinn فَزَادُوهُمۡ fazaduhum so they increased them رَهَقٗا rahaqan (in) burden ٦
wa-annahu kana rijalun mina al-insi ya'udhuna birijalin mina al-jini fazaduhum rahaqan
— Transliteration
And verily, there were men among mankind who took shelter with the masculine among the jinns, but they (jinns) increased them (mankind) in sin and disbelief

72:7
وَأَنَّهُمۡ wa-annahum And that they ظَنُّواْ zannu thought كَمَا kama as ظَنَنتُمۡ zanantum you thought أَن an that لَّن lan never يَبۡعَثَ yab'atha will raise ٱللَّهُ al-lahu Allah أَحَدٗا ahadan anyone ٧
wa-annahum zannu kama zanantum an lan yab'atha al-lahu ahadan
— Transliteration
And they thought as you thought, that Allah will not send any Messenger (to mankind or jinns)

72:8
وَأَنَّا wa-anna And that we لَمَسۡنَا lamasna sought to touch ٱلسَّمَآءَ al-samaa the heaven فَوَجَدۡنَٰهَا fawajadnaha but we found it مُلِئَتۡ muli-at filled (with) حَرَسٗا harasan guards شَدِيدٗا shadidan severe وَشُهُبٗا washuhuban and flaming fires ٨
wa-anna lamasna al-samaa fawajadnaha muli-at harasan shadidan washuhuban
— Transliteration
And we have sought to reach the heaven; but found it filled with stern guards and flaming fires

72:9
وَأَنَّا wa-anna And that we كُنَّا kunna used to نَقۡعُدُ naq'udu sit مِنۡهَا min'ha there in مَقَٰعِدَ maqa'ida positions لِلسَّمۡعِۖ lilssam'i for hearing فَمَن faman but (he) who يَسۡتَمِعِ yastami'i listens ٱلۡأٓنَ al-ana now يَجِدۡ yajid will find لَهُۥ lahu for him شِهَابٗا shihaban a flaming fire رَّصَدٗا rasadan waiting ٩
wa-anna kunna naq'udu min'ha maqa'ida lilssam'i faman yastami'i al-ana yajid lahu shihaban rasadan
— Transliteration
And verily, we used to sit there in stations, to (steal) a hearing, but any who listens now will find a flaming fire watching him in ambush

72:10
وَأَنَّا wa-anna And that we لَا la not نَدۡرِيٓ nadri we know أَشَرٌّ asharrun whether evil أُرِيدَ urida is intended بِمَن biman for (those) who فِي fi (are) in ٱلۡأَرۡضِ al-ardi the earth أَمۡ am or أَرَادَ arada intends بِهِمۡ bihim for them رَبُّهُمۡ rabbuhum their Lord رَشَدٗا rashadan a right path ١٠
wa-anna la nadri asharrun urida biman fi al-ardi am arada bihim rabbuhum rashadan
— Transliteration
And we know not whether evil is intended for those on earth, or whether their Lord intends for them a Right Path
